Chapter Nineteen

“What are you and Freddie going to do, Jake?” I’d met Kelly at Fido’s, Fred’s favorite coffee shop in town because they welcomed dogs and gave them treats. I’d told her about Margot’s financial problems and wanting to sell the homestead out from under Bonnie.

“We might be able to stay put. I thought the deed to my shack was valid. Now I’m not so sure. But it won’t be the same if some corporate conglomerate surrounds me. I’m sure they’ll level the barn and have their own equipment to do all the planting and harvesting, so there won’t be anything for me to do.”

She reached out for my hand and grasped it in hers. “You could always write, you know, or take me to some exotic, sandy beach where they have bottomless margaritas,” she said with a far-off look in her eyes.

If she’d known the balance of my checking account, she would have never suggested the second choice, as pleasant as it sounded. “If they offer me a small fortune for my five acres and the shack I rebuilt, I promise to book that flight to Tahiti. Unless you’d consider moving to the lake.”

Kelly suddenly sat up straight. I thought she was going to spill her mocha latte. She squeezed her eyes shut, opened them wide, then asked, “Are you proposing, Jake?”

My face turned red. “No. I know you’re not ready for that. I just thought it was time to move in together. Fred and I need to move on from that little shack and I’m sure whoever buys Bonnie’s place will give us enough to get a good start on a place at my lake property.”

Kelly picked up her latte and looked around for a waitress. Spotting one at the next table, she yelled out, “Miss, I let my drink get cold. Could you warm it up for me?” Then turning back toward me and Fred. “Well, what do you think, Freddie? Are you ready to move to the lake?”

Wow, I thought to myself. I really touched a nerve asking her to move in. “It won’t be for some time. We don’t even know if Bonnie will agree to sell the homestead and if she does, I’ll have to negotiate a good price for my shack, assuming I own it, and then it will take at least six months to build the house on the lake.”

Our waitress brought Kelly a fresh mocha latte and set it in front of her. Once she was gone, Kelly put both hands around it like she was freezing. “I’m sorry I overreacted, Jake. You know I love you and Freddie. Of course, I’ll be happy to move in with you. In fact, why wait? You guys can move in with me now,” she leaned over to kiss me.

I didn’t want to ruin the moment and tell her pets weren’t allowed in her apartment.

“Well, we’re not homeless yet,” I answered after Fred got between us, looking for his kiss.

She gave my hands a slight squeeze before putting hers back around her latte.
